A visit to Konrad Zuse (1910-1995), the inventor of the computer. We enter into the world of the young Berlin civil engineer, who in 1935 decided to build an entirely new kind of calculating machine.
The film shows the many digressions in the life of Konrad Zuse: his relay machines, hindered in their development by wartime events, and the Z3 from 1941 which counts today as the first fully working computer in history.
At the centre of this film stands the reconstructed mechanical Z1.
The rattling, jangling machine from 1936 was the first of Zuse's programmable calculators, in which the mechanical an the electronic ages intertwine impressively.
In old age, Zuse reviews his life and mishaps with the patents: the inventor of the computer never saw any of the profit millions.
